I have got the trailing bogie up and running, just the sandpipes to fit. I will temporarily use the same inner frame to build the motor bogie outer frames as my motor bogie from ABC arrived 14mm short. Brian is sending some extention pieces so should be able to crack on soon :)
I really like white metal bogies, they are nice and heavy and I believe help with
good adhesion. The only drawback is that they can be a tad noisy.

Very neat. Looks like a cross between an AAR type A and type B truck :).
I'm going to stick my neck out here....I believe the Commonwealth bogie as used on the Hymek, Mk1 coaches etc was of American origin, built in the UK under licence from the Commonwealth Steel Company Illinois.
Probably why you like it :D

Hey Grumps,

As I'm just looking and admiring your work there..... I thought to myself.... Hmmm wouldn't those bogies look better with the cast whitemetal springs attached to the equalising beam chopped out and real ones put in their place :D

I'll send them over!!
I thought about it when I built the 47, as I added a fair bit of extra detail to the bogies. In the end I left them alone and to be honest once painted, weathered and sat under the loco, I don't think it would make a lot of difference. I will nip in to the workshop for another look. I think the springs I have won't look 'beefy' enough though.

I think you're probably right. Once painted and weathered they'll look the part, a nice solid presence. I built a set of JLTRT GWR American bogies, they had a separate "real" coil spring to fit and they were a real pain to get them sitting right. The seating had to be absolutely perfect otherwise they didn't sit straight and the twist made them look false.

Hi Adrian,
I have just been sifting through my 'Spring collection'
(not my wardrobe :D)
None of the springs are beefy enough.
I built some JLTRT Commonwealth bogies with real springs a few years ago, and to be honest they looked a tad feeble, and like you say, a bit of a pain to seat properly. (See below) So, I will stay with the cast variety and carefully weather them individually

Hi Mike,
Both look very good, although the inner springs suffer from twisting as Adrian says.
As an aside, did you manage to get your JLTRT GUV to sit at the correct height?
I built mine not long after it came out, so the issue may have been sorted since.

If Mr Grumpy will indulge me with a small thread hi-jack would either Mr Grumpy or Mike (Ressaldar) be willing to take a photo of the underneath
of their JLTRT GUV so I can see the general arrangement of where everything goes? Had one on the workbench for a while (years!) that came with instructions for passenger carrying MK1 variants. Not that helpful for a GUV.

Many Thanks
Anthony

Sorry Anthony,
I have recently sold on all my 'rail blue' stock so can't help.
No probs with the thread hijack, I'm as guilty as everyone! :D
