Playing around with AI

Perhaps a little off topic…..

As someone a little sceptical of AI. Given the series of errors by my local medical practice ( triple the quantity of medication, as but
one example) perhaps AI may be of value. Not entirely convinced………….but I’m the sort of person who rough checks a calculator!!!!!!!!!

What will happen as far as I can see is that it will be fine whilst all the unskilled and some skilled jobs start disappearing putting thousands out of work ( all in the name of progress ) but when it starts affecting the nobs at the top of the pile ( multi billionaires, politicians, CEO's etc.) and they start loosing their jobs that'll be the day that AI get's the boot !

I think by then it’ll be too late.

what is certain is that the pace of innovation in AI and robotics (and fairly obviously, the combination of both) is not slowing. There is less and less that cannot be done without a human, and as the tech advances, the cost break point where it’s cheaper to employ one or the other will continue to move in the direction of not employing people.

And people are unreliable, messy and don’t do as they’re told, they insist on taking time off to sleep, and want holidays and expect pay rises…

what is perhaps most concerning is that government (every colour, every state) is neither equipped, nor motivated, to deal with it.

One problem is who is going to buy all the stuff if they are out of work? I think civilisation will have a near-death experience until people realise we have to live without it.
if you're the archetypal Bond villain, and you have a robot factory that can make whatever you want whenever you want it, you no longer need consumers. They are just a drain on resources, like workers.

PS

This was how I got started with AI. I sent a photo of the crane to my mate, simply to show him what I was up to at the time. He replied with two AI-modified images. One had a set of CND protestors with Ban the Bomb placards, I haven't posted this one. I said this was a bit too political for me and he sent several more. The one with the fire brigade was the favourite at NEEGOG, although the one with the weeds is quite artistic. Afterwards, I asked him if he could work up a photo of the buildings at Heybridge Basin to make a backscene. This was how my backscene began.

A problem with taking photos of models, particularly when you're looking along a scene or stock item, is that it's difficult to get everything in focus. Some cameras use photo stacking to achieve this and that's what a lot of the model mags use to get more life like scene.

I've tried finding and loading an app on to the phone but they were not very good. I then wondered if I could ask AI to do it. So I took 4 photos of the scene, each with a different focal point.

The result was the image below, which I cropped a bit tighter:

I'm quite impressed with what it managed to do, so then asked it to remove the two dark areas in the top corners. These are the backscene "hole in the sky":

Nice, that's better. I then thought it might be worth asking it to give it a 1940s appearance in shading, so asked it to give the photo a 1940s look. What I forgot to say was don't alter or add any details...

Apparently, adding an LMS sign helps set the date, but that's not what I wanted. So, back a step, this time I asked it to alter the colour but remembered to tell it not to alter anything else.

That will do as an experiment, quite a pleasing result.

Everything in the scene has been modelled, nothing is "fake". Just focus and colour alteration, and we've been doing that for years without AI.

The colour rendition (and everything else apart from the suspect nameplates of the blue and green engines) about that shed scene makes for a nice image - the worrying thing is I really have no idea how to tell it apart from reality.
Does that matter?
Maybe not so long as I adopt a ‘don’t take anything at face value’ approach.

I’m concerned by James (the red engine) which appears to have the blower on full and the safety valves blowing off hard. Henry to a lesser extent. And I do wonder what they’re burning. Old tyres?
