Prototype Photographs of my youth!

Whilst searching for something completely different I came across a pen drive, which contains a lot of photographs taken by me when I was just a lad. Not being a photographer the quality is somewhat questionable but hopefully you'll find them interesting. I can't recall precise dates, but would have been in the early 1970's. I'll add a few when I remember but thought I'd start 'out west';

Weather outside is awful, so some more pictures to lighten the soul one would hope!

Westerns on shed, Laira agin. Apologies but identities would be on original photographs now sadly lost.



Something a little more different! D1041 on Motorail working at Kensington Olympia. Although date unknown, it'll be 1975 as I also happened upon the old BR exhibition train, which had been hired by publishers of Edward Heath's books and the man himself was on board so got a signed copy of the book!



Something very different now, Falcon at Severn Tunnel Junction. I recall loco was effectively in store inside the depot but when we called the very, very, nice foreman offered to fire it up and ran it around the yard for us to photograph!

...and finally something for those who might like a weathering challenge. This is 47131 (not sure where, Laira?) in desperate need of a clean and repaint!

You're probably right there. I did have doubts about the number of 47's and the Peak for Laira.

The last photo is Plymouth, probably 1974, when Platforms 2 & 3 were turned into bays. The temporary nature of the fence and wooden surface suggests the work hasn't long been completed. BR officially stopped diplaying headcodes from Jan 1st 1976. Great photos, keep them coming, please.

Have a few minutes to spare,so something a little different! When very much younger I went on a Worcester Loco Society (if memory serves!) trip to Hof and Bebra. Hof was one of the few remaining enclaves of DB steam and Bebra was a location where DR steam came 'across the wall'. I also visited various other European locations. Hope you enjoy!

First off, we are at Bebra with DR 01-0533 8 just setting back onto train bound for the 'East'



Next is the same loco now coupled up and waiting the road

Bebra - a history of the Elok is here Baureihe E10 e.V. » 141 414–3. She was allocated to Bebra (FB) from new in 1966 until 1984, 1984-1993 to Hamburg-Eidelstedt (AE) and finally to Braunschweig (HBS) in 1993 until withdrawal in 1999.

It's an awful picture, but realised the second wagon is a long way from home! Class 216 unidentified

Irrespective of the quality it's the first time I've seen a photo of a British Rail Fährbootwagen outside the UK. Top stuff - keep them coming.

I suspect this and the other photo of the DR Br 01.5 will be on the climb (Steigung Hönebach) from Bebra to Hönebach tunnel on the line to Erfurt in the DDR. The town behind the train could either be Ronshausen or Ziebach.

The well known climb is Die Cornberger Rampe which heads north from Bebra and not into the DDR as was.

Thanks for the updates. I've had a look at some other (poor) photographsand realised it was Bebra depot where the 141 was seen. I'd never noticed the wagon until sorting some pictures to share, it's a shame it'll probably be the only one and wonder if I get a prize for furthest from UK category?

When I saw Honebach, the memories came back, yes it was on that climb. Thought traffic was heading East, but every day is a school day!

Have had another dig around the shoebox of memories. First off, to the Midland Main Line;

If in doubt, bring your own shunter! An goods working at Leagrave with an ex-works class 08 in the consist.



A few for the scenery buffs, Leagrave Station building and signal box





And lastly, the ubiquitous 4-car DMU's. My endearing memories are of these 'getting the bell' and then revving until everything shook before creeping away from the station. Those were the days of diesel fumes!

Brings back some memories - albeit of the 1990s NSE Thameslink . I used to commute from both Leagrave and Luton to Farringdon on the 319s or to Moorgate or St Pancras on the 317s. I switched to Luton after my car was broken into at Leagrave plus there were the additional fast trains from Luton and the Sutton all stations which started and terminated at Luton.

Leagrave station building hasn't really changed that much apart from OHLE and lengthened platforms to take the 12 car Thameslink trains. Obviously the signal box has gone and the goods yard is now the obligatory car park with access to the platforms.

Luton is still the 1930s station except with five platforms (again lengthened for 12 cars).

This batch starts 'darn sarf!' as us locals would say. Let's kick off with a few from the old London Bridge - but firstly the old Waterloo (thanks to Peter for correction!);

2-car 5942 and 4-car 5115 ib the terminal part of the station.


4-car 5224 heading off toward Dartford-ish?


4-car 5346 heading toward Cannon Street or Blackfriars.


2-car 5738 looking ex-works on an '82'


Meanwhile 4-car 6070 is on an '08' working


I think this is Slade Green with 6366, 7142, and 7157


Moving up a gear, 73002 and I'm pretty sure this is London Bridge



Then to Waterloo for 74007


As they say, and now for something completely different! Lurking in the recesses of Slade Green, it could have been a failed experiment for rapid commuter loading but in reality I think the coach had suffered a fire and was reduced to a cabriolet vehicle. Certainly different!

Lovely pics Cransford. The first pic of today's post is not London Bridge I'm afraid though, but the lost Waterloo, "Windsor lines", or "North" to some!

It is the bit of the station that was swept away to become what turned out to be the "temporary" Eurostar terminal!

Well, it's been a while!

As it's a wet day I thought a further rummage through history might be in order'

Let's start with a photo where nothing of the main theme still exists! At Liverpool Exchange a Cravens twin DMU arrives with a class 0? tucked up with a brake van. It'll be a Saturday in 1974 I think.


Back toa time when Watford Junction could boast a yard shunter! An unidenrified class 25 and M55009 providing the 'Abbey Flier'.


A little far off, but I think this might have been a test train associated with the exension of the wires to Glasgow. An interesting mix of coaches behind I think a class 86.


One for the third rail buffs, departmental unit 022 from an old 2-BIL or 2-HAL unit



And not forgetting our Western Region friends, one of the PWM departmental locos.



and finally, for now, parcels by rail!
