Some time since I posted Class 22 on the backburner until JLRT comes out as I need the diemensions for the indicator boxes having decided to scratch build the front ends . Following the encounter with the garage floor I have rebuilt the cab sides etc ,current state can be seen in the attached photos .( sorry not in the right order but you get the general picture)
I have three presflos two in partial build org Malcom Butterworth and recent updated version plus Mr Watermans finest still in the box . I decided I needed a project for the annual hols in Cornwall if it rains so decided to have a go at batch building 3 presflos . Paper patterns have been created from the kits already held and transfered to plasticard .The body is 40 thou and I am quite pleased with the first test body . Strapping will be evergreen 20 nos 126,127 & 128 . I will hopefully post progress as I go along.

Hi Andrew, interested in the presflo builds. Are you taking details from the kits you have to work out the build?

To a certain extent yes for quickness but you could work out the details from the drawing and photos . As these are for my personal use I dont think I am breaking any copy right issues but happy to be told otherwise . The JLTR is alot more chunky than the brass kits so it these yhst I am using as a reference point .

NB How do I change the heading spelling mistake . Doh !!!!!

From experience - good luck with the Class 22 - although I note the re-positioned set of side grilles and you also look to have made a far better job of the windscreens than I did. Stick at it!!

I will be watching this thread with interest.

I like presflow wagons so to see you scratch build is going to be very interesting.
Also i have seen a couple of class 22 builds so to see another is great. I like to compare how different people build things.
Jordans 22 is EXCELLENT, but im sure he wont mind me saying it was a " challenge " for him as the kit is'nt the best for quality.

Interesting to hear that you plan to scratchbuild the fronts, Richard Dokerell's did that in plasticard on his wonderful Class 22



Did you decide to go down the scratchbuid route because of the damage to the cabs or the poor whitemetal castings ?

Which do you think having said that I knew what I was buying but no other Class 22 kits around other than a rehash of El crappo .It is a challenge and I messed up the the front cab windows as I couldnt get them right and the heat eventually weaken them and they snapped off . I also kept catching the side cab windows and likewise these broke . So be warned take the time to try and get them right first time .Also I need to improve my soldering skills still a tendency to use to much solder . Having seen Christians work at shows and on Building 7 mm locos site not to mention a certain Mr Daniels puts my efforts to shame but something to aim for. As I say I will get there but just takes a lot longer .
I am shortly to take early retirement so should be able to crack on with these and my other projects JLRT Western and Towers Warship (pictures posted in an earlier thread).
Wont be any updates for next 10 dys as on Hols and no access to the internet Will post progress on my return .

Also have a look at Trevor Hales Class 22 build RMWEB about two years ago or as he is now a Thunderer may be he could be persuaded to post an update.

NB hope to call in at WSR 17 /6/2012 .

Managed to do some modelling on holiday . I intend to follow the brass method of build but found that this didnt work and adopted applying the horizonals and seperate verticals . Once decided on the vertical fit can use as a template for the others so you get consistancy . I will post updates as I progress .

Doesn't time fly I thought it was time to do something about this build . I was intending to scratch build the fronts but have used the casting supplied and will build up the details etc . As you can see plenty of isopan required to blend every thing together and some touching up still to do .Various brass strip add to the roof and sides to up grade the kit ,rain strips to add to replace the brass u channel I had used which just didn't look right . I just couldn't get my hrad round forming the valances as supplied so scratch built from plastkard 20 thou strip and 60 thou quarter round and 40 x 60 thou strip to add depth backing pieces from plastkcard .
Having reviewed the bogie castings decided I couldn't live with them and would take to much time to bring up to a acceptable standard . So an E mail to JLTRT and after agreeing a price with Laurie he has kindly agreed to supply various parts from their kit ,Bogie sides ,Buffers ,pipe runs etc and I am now just awaiting deliver to push on and finish .

The nose/"face" was where I struggled with this kit, & was never entirely happy with how things turned out. Funny enough once I worked out a simple former to bend the valances I found that one of the best bits of the kit, as it was then easy to copy the battered look the real things ended up with.

I appreciate that there's some opportunity for things to change in both the prototype, with its strange cast aluminium components, and the model but my impression is that it was accurate.

Some off the work I created was of my own making and not a reflection of the kit .As indicated before their were some errors in the etches ie the grills in wrong place which real should have been corrected before production and the casting do leave something to be desired . However at £170 at the time it can be made into a good representation of the original as shown by Richard Dokerell's efforts above and his build Traction Nov 2008 issue 169 which inspired me to buy one .

Now where that's big file .

Yes, it was more down to me really, & being my 1st 'metal' kit. I should've taken more care with the join between nose & windscreens for one thing, as I ended up with curved screens - curved across the screen, not the built-in curves!!

The 'face' just doesn't look right. Windscreen at the wrong angle for a start.
