Idea's for MPD's

Hi me Boyo's I have a bit of a problem as some of you may know I very shortly will be building onto the side of the house a walk through, I have negotiated with the domestic authorities the use of the extension as my work shop. I have a few idea's that I would like to run past you guys to see what you think. Dimensions wise I have about 17 feet long by 3 feet wide, the room has 2 doors 1 either end and both opening inwards. My problem is thus I am using some of the old kitchen cabinets for the work bench and some of the work top for a work surface no problem there then, its the next bit I want to build on top of the work surface an MPD along the lines of Saltley with a kick back to get on to the shed, again no problem the kick back must be fed with loco's from the under side of the base board so a gradient along the lines of Preston docks will have to be built in, Any idea's guys as I want to get it planned out and want to build it when I am not trying!!!!!!!!! to start on the Garden Layout again

Got a Question about MPD's

Umm... what is the question, then, exactly..? confused0024.gif

The arrangement at Saltley was always fascinating to watch; does the approach on this proposed layout have to come up from a lower level? Can't it just come along the back of the Depot from a short hidden siding at the opposite end of the headshunt? Seems a simpler thing to do than multi-level, for a similar effect.
Or maybe you are asking us for permission to build it?... :)) well of course you can take that for granted, just so long as the locos stick to the True Faith... but I think we can take that for granted in return..!!!    :))

Got a Question about MPD's

Hi Ian,

a starter for 10 penciled track plan would be a great help. Sounds a bit like my Hatcham service depot - have a look at that track plan and work on from that.

cheers

Idea's for MPD's ( renamed due to being knackerd when I originally wrote it)

The thought did cross my mind however it's at the idea stage at the moment. The reasoning behind the ramp to the lower level is simple, I would use it to change the engine fleet on a rota basis and run a length or 2 of sidings towards the front of the plank. I also want to use the kick back to be able to propel 100 ton fuel oil tankers into the depot and any other ancillary as per the prototype.

More later Ian

Well I finally sat down and have drawn my idea's down on paper only to find the scanner wont work without printer ink!!!!!!!!!, even though I am not printing anything so I have resorted to paint in good old XP. the layout is a bit of a mix between Bescot, Saltley, Soho and Preston Dock SDG. See what you think.

Like the plan Ian, but I would be tempted to widen the boards beyond 2ft if at all possible so more scenics could be included

Hi Ian,

update 1 - I've substituted Marcway 3 way tandems in lieu of some of the Peco units and managed to squeeze the second siding in below the servicing shed. The widths shown on the plan are for the overall trackbed - not the track itself - the four lines at the bottom right show this.

Hi Ian,

some slight 'tweeking' I've juggled the pointwork and made it 'continuous' - something that I don't advocate with DC, but with DCC wiring, the problems are somewhat overcome. Also changed the order from 3 way-3way-LH to 3way-LH-3way which enabled me to pinch a few inches and feed that back in on the lefthand side of the layout, which results in a slightly better shed area.

Mike I think you have nearly nailed it,if the fuel road was shortened and the demic SDG curved around the back of the shed (AKA Barry yard) that would make an ideal feature for a retaining wall,I personally like the 3 stabling SDG's but also think it may be a little too crowded could you loose the 3 way into the holding SDG's and  have 2 roads and possibly change the single point for a double slip and then join the  holding SDG's and fuel road to the D/S. I like what you have done to the plan but I am inclined to try the less is more approach, If you could Mike could you slightly kick the shed at a sight angle (the same as the demic roads) so that it looses the side on view that everyone see's . I was toying with the idea that the retaining walls for the incline would mark the line of the Holding SDG's there by making 2 fans of track rather than 1

Mike thanks again for the input it's much appreciated

Mike sorry to be a pain in the A** but could you have another slight tweek could you move the 1 D/S towards the other leaving the 1 attached to the incline where it is then change ( if it fits better)the 3 way left hand to a 3 way right hand and put the changed ( if needed)3 way next to the D/S you have moved and lengthen the holding SDG's and the fuel road.It will shorten the Stabling SDG's but it cant be helped Could you also draw an imaginary line Parallel along the side of the incline and slew the holding SDG's to that please mate there by extending them. Mike it looks excellent at the mo thanks for your input.

Mike what I am trying to achieve is a small and compact depot where the loco's are on show but there is plenty of scope to be able to move some thing if I want any where on the layout.  I envisage that the most enjoyable phase will be the loading and unloading via the incline of  the stock. with having the 25Kv.

I am also playing with the idea of knocking a small opening through the end wall and sealing a small box to the wall outside thereby allowing me to run longer small trains up the incline, I will take some pictures later today to show the space available and what we will be building this year.
