The Peak is coming on well but very slowly.

D99, 3rd Carabinier for me. Split box

I've got the body and the bogies done and most of the fittings painted reay to go on.

But I stopped work on it when the good weather came.

It's a top priority for finishing this winter.

I love the Mk2 that you're doing. It's starting to look very good.

The interiors of D1013 and D1062 are painted a colour called "County Cream" which is a reasonable match for the cream that BR used in maroon days.

If you compare early photos of Swindon and Crewe 1000s you will notice that Crewe examples have electrical conduit on the cab bulkhead painted light orange, but Swindon locos do not.

Photos of 1000s in the very early maroon days also seem to show the whole interior side of the cab door painted maroon or a dark colour.
All good pointers for at least one of our Wezzies. Which company does "County Cream"?

As I do not have a vast library of books on the Westerns I shall be pleased to see any references which illustrate the matter of the conduits etc. and the interior cab doors.

thank you, Graham

All the 52s are named and have data plates and depot stickers now.

Wheels to paint, cab interiors to paint and detail, buffer hoses to change....................and weathering.

Severn Mill Nameplates and Precision Decals Data Plates and allocation stickers.

The Precision Decals stuff is excellent and you order exactly what you want from them.

They have a comprehensive web site

They are very fine and delicate, but look superb.

Hi Graeme,

Excellent stuff:thumbs: and all those lovely westerns.. Which ones have you chosen, i think i remember you chose Sovereign:confused:.

As regards the conduit all pics i can find seem to show the conduit in the same light grey as the cab. Just a little dirtier where the grime had collected. I cant seem to find any conclusive colour pic showing the conduit when ex-works ( ie orange ). I will keep looking and let you know if and when i find anything out.

Hi Rob

They are Sovereign (38), Marksman (32), Dragoon (34) and Crusader (04).

All of them except Crusader were Bath Road Locos in 1970.

Crusader was a Laira Machine.

Apart from Dragoon, they were all early withdrawals.

Sovereign was delivered to BR (along with King) on the very day that I was born and I've always had a soft spot for Marksman!

My wife chose Dragoon.

Thanks for the help with the cab colours

Hi Graeme,

Nice one:thumbs:. I too seem to pic the early withdrawls. So far i have Stalwart (06), Trooper (33) which are the only later ones i had planned. I also have Buccaneer (18) and the next two will be Hero (20) and King (39).

My future plan is to have Enterprise (00), Talisman (07), Lancer (27), Marksman (32), Marquis (46) but time, finances etc will decide on those.

I will look forward to your weathering of your fleet.;)

Excellent stuff!

Your layout will look like a saturday afternoon at Laira!!

I was particularly tempted to go for Enterprise or Challenger.

I've got three unbuilt JLRT ones in store so I think that'll be for them.

But there's a lot of other things to do before I get around to building them.

I was lucky enough to see the whole fleet in my trainspotting days (although I only managed to see some of the early scrappers after they'd been withdrawn), so I tend to go for locos that I can remember in a oarticular time and place!

Graham,

Swindon 1000, electrical conduit painted cab bulkhead colour - "The WR Diesel-Hydraulics", H Dady, p13 D1004,
"The Heyday of the Westerns", D Huntriss, p8, D1009.

Crewe 1000, electrical conduit on cab bulkhead painted orange - "Fifty Years of the Westerns", D Cross, p7, D1047.
"Looking Back at Western Region Hydraulics", K Derrick, p80, D1061.

Maroon / dark colour on interior cab door - "Diesels Around London - a colour portfolio", D Cross, p57, D1042.

A quick look through these books revealed that most 1000s seem to have light grey cab interiors in maroon days!

Cream cab interior - "Looking Back at Western Region Hydraulics", K Derrick, p51.

In 1:1 scale, County Cream is manufactured by Dulux. I do not know what the equivalent colour is called in modelling paints.

The photos of Crewe 1000s mentioned above with orange conduit are not very clear, but the conduit is definately not bulkhead colour. There is a photo of D1059 at Bentley Heath Crossing, recently released from Crewe and the conduit is clearly orange, but I cannot locate this photo yet. Similarly, there is a photo of D1062, recently released to traffic seen at Acocks Green I believe, and the conduit is clearly orange. This photo appears on the cover of the 1964 Ian Allan spotters Combined Volume I believe.

As always, if you want accuracy and authenticity in a model, you can never do enough research!!

Roger

Edit - D1062 photo at Acocks Green is also on the back cover of "The Heyday of the Westerns", D Huntriss

Thank you Roger. All this "non-standardisation" is enough to make one want to go back to the Churchward / Collet eras.... or embrace "blue-n-dirt" liveries.

Hi Roger.

Thanks very much for that.

I shall have a nother trawl through your references!

Brilliant stuff!

You're right Steve.

Far too clean.

There's a big weathering session on the way.

The WR weren't known for keeping anything clean!
