7mm GWR Locos I have built

This was an interesting build that I completed some years ago. A 'Barnum'. I can't remember the kit manufacturer but I do remember it caused a few headaches. It was designed to have various white metal bits sandwiched between the frames, that didn't fit, and I had to make a few modifications to get it running well. It will now pull 3 heavy coaches without difficulty, all it needs to do on its home railway.

 Don't think we'll be seeing much of Sandy at the back of the class…...

The homebrew varnish sounds interesting!

Hi Osgood
I have always used Ronseal polyurethane varnish ever since I had a disaster with Humbrol many years ago. The Clear Satin was my preferred version but it is getting more and more difficult to get hold off these days but I did get my hands on a tin of gloss. I let it down with Precision Matting agent to take the gloss off but transfers and lining can still look a bit bright so I add a 'dollop' (about a brush full) of Humbrol Satin Black to the mix to tone everything down and act like a light dusting of soot and ash over the loco. It gives me the finish that I like and others have also commented that it looks natural.

Hope this helps
Sandy

Thanks! I've been following how folk finish their paint jobs - its the very last opportunity to ruin all that hard work and I am dreading the first time I have to try it!!
