Problem with access

Hi Adrian

Apologies for bothering you, however over the last couple of days or so when trying to access WT I’ve been met with the following: ‘Oops we ran into difficulties……try again later’.

Was wondering whether you were aware?

Best,

Jon

Hi,

Thanks for flagging that up - I wasn't aware of the problem as I haven't struggled. Anyway I checked the admin logs, normally there are one or two server error logs, however this time thousands of entries in the error log all related to "too many entries in the session log"

It seems like many other websites we are being totally bombarded by "guests" and it's overwhelming the site.

Vast majority are from Brazil and Vietnam - and it sounds like they have thousands of "bots" scraping the internet to feed and train their own AI machines. :headbang: :headbang: . The sooner the AI (Tulip) mania bubble bursts the better!

I'll see what I can do over the weekend to block guests from those regions to reduce the number of guests but it's a bit like whack-a-mole. Look on the bright side - enjoy the modelling time you now have and we can catch up next week when they have moved on to the next websites. :D

Thanks, Adrian.

It’s not a problem as I can always try again later, but thought I'd better mention it in case it became an issue.

As a quick follow up after a little more investigation - it seems that a session log area is filling up with all the "guest" activity and ends up blocking the genuine users. The forum software has a house keeping script to clear out the redundant entries from this log, it's set to run every hour but this doesn't appear to be sufficient so at the moment as a temporary measure I'm running it every 30 minutes.

So for information the script runs automatically at 10 minutes past the hour. So if you do have problems accessing the site then wait for a little while and try again at 11 minutes past the hour. Hopefully the housekeeping script will have cleared the space to allow you to log on.

Late to the party again, but I would like to report that I too have experienced this problem. I usually left things a while and then tried again and logged in without problem. I just thought it was something at my end..............

Thank you Jonte for raising it and Adrian for taking steps to relieve the situation. Very obliged indeed.

Roger (A very non-technical person ;).)

The 'Oops . . .' message is occurring with monotonous regularity. I appreciate the problem is an external one - It's just a pain!

Still struggling to block by Country so at the moment I have the house keeping script clearing the temporary table every 15 minutes. It's a workaround at the moment rather than a fix but hopefully reduces some of the pain. Thank you for your patience.
