Due to a logistics blunder on my part, I have to order some miniature plugs/sockets for the decoder and motor, and route availability dot and correct style overhead electric warning flash transfers. Also I would like the Beyer Peacock makers plates for the cab sides. So, my Hymek has been put to one side for a few days.

Still needing to keep from under my wife's feet, I have emptied the JLTRT class 22 box on to my workbench.

Brian Daniels has previously posted his build, but mine will differ in some respects:

1. I am using a ABC motor bogie. This brings with it an interesting quandary on how to attach it to the chassis, as the studs for the bogies are cast in to the chassis, and would need to be cut to a precise length and a very thin retaining nut used to clear the carden shaft of the bogie. Laurie has kindly cast me a replacement chassis with only one stud, so I'm hoping to solder a stud in to the motor bogie mount and gain access by leaving the roof removable as on the Hymek.

2. I am going to experiment and make a pair of split axles to alleviate adding pickups. I have used plunger pickups on my MOK 1400 and Hymek trailing bogie, but found they create a lot of drag, and need very careful fettling to allow the wheels to rotate freely, even on the Hymek's heavy white metal / nickel silver bogie.

I was concerned that the class 22 bogie being resin is quite light, and using plunger pickups could force the wheels to skate along the track.

3. I will be using the Howes class 22 ESU V4 decoder and as on the Hymek, and the excellent Cliff Williams 25mm speaker and enclosure.

4. My Class 22 is to be modelled as an original loco with disk type head codes, and without the small yellow warning panel as D6327.

I'm about to go through the huge pile of lost wax and white metal castings, and will start the build soon.....

I'll be watching with interest as I'm hoping to start mine soon. Have you found Heather's build on here yet?

I've got a few refinements in mind for mine. Beyond the scale-like drive I'm also looking at springing the bogies. I'll almost certainly Alclad the cab window frames as well.

You've made an excellent job of the Hymek. One small thing, and I'm being rather picky here (forgive me!) if it were mine I'd smooth off the
transition between the green roof overhang above the windscreens and the white windscreen surrounds. You can only see it when looking up from below but as you've done the rest so beautifully it seems a shame not to tidy it up a little.

Its on my snagging list ;)

Good Man! Now on with the 22 please if you'd be so good!

(I need some more guilty shoves to drag myself back to the JLTRT 50 I've had stalled for the last 5 years!)

Im intrigued...... what is this Alclad process? The silver surrounds on the Hymek were an absolute pain, and I'm not looking forward to painting the 22's window surrounds!

Don't take too much notice of my build, wherever it is. I was building a pre-production kit of parts, some of which weren't even in the correct materials. I don't think it has a huge amount of resemblance to the shipping kits, having seen a few around the place. It was also a static model, rushed through for launch and discussion purposes on the JLTRT stand that year at Telford.

Richard,
Alclad is a metallised paint. Done properly it's indistinguishable from raw metal and doesn't look like paint.
@Yorkshire Dave has used it to great effect on a US HO stainless steel car so is a good chap to catch up with on the subject.

My intention is to prepare and prime the cabs and apply the Alclad before assembly. I'll then build up the model, mask the glazing and window frames and then apply the main colours.

It should look a great deal better than just using regular paint, although there are other treatments which can be used to apply metal to a model surface; metal foil, metallised waxes and even fine powder that's dusted over a tacky glue.

Class 22s are breaking out everywhere, just ordered one for D6337. I will use the ABC motor and gearbox, but not the built up ABC chassis.
Should sound good, just finishing brutalising a Heljan Hymek to take one of my 35mm round speakers. Funny how we are working on similar prototypes Richard!

Steph,

Do you think it would be any good for reproducing the polished steel borders on smokebox wingplates as on Caledonian locomotives?

Jim.

Jim,

It has to be airbrushed so would be a pain to apply in that example. One of the metallised waxes might be a better proposition.

I think Warren uses Humbrol through his bow pen for that job. I recall that was the way he approached Nick Dunhill's T9s.

Hi Cliff,
I used your 35mm speaker and enclosure on my Hymek, with Legomanbiffo's sound. It really does sound the business! Thanks for a couple of great speakers:thumbs:

PS: I have just offered up the frames and spring assembly to the ABC motor bogie, and everything seems to fit ok on a dry run. I will have to work out a way to add the end bogie frame detail to the bogie, but shouldn't be too difficult.....even for me :D
