It’s a brilliant piece of music, I presume the lyrics refer to doing a deal with the devil at midnight, but I really can’t make sense of them

Depends on which musical history you read. One version has the original Robert Johnson song 'Cross Road Blues' about being stranded in rural Mississipi trying to hitch a ride. Tommy Johnson (another Delta Blues artist) later placed the devil folklore around the song.

There is a detailed explanation in the description with this YouTube video:

In particular, the "rider" is his guitar, and Rosedale is in Mississippi not Yorkshire.

I believe "rider" was slang for girlfriend/mistress - hence going to the "barrel-house" drinking/dancing place with her.

When creating the 'fictional' Rosedale* are the buildings here based on existing Derbyshire Peak District properties?

Would the same tenet apply to 'fictional, scenes of other locales?

* As soon as I see Rosedale all I can think of is the 1966 Cream song Crossroads (a great live track!) which has the line - Well, I'm going down to Rosedale.
I can’t fully speak for Paul Bambrick on this Dave.
They are his work with some of Keith’s embellishments.
However, I’m fairly sure the odd one had a Metcalfe Kit at its core, and PB tweaked them, created the stonework, etc, to make them represent buildings that would fit the area modelled.
Others he’s used prototype images for, some of those images I’m using for the scenic work.
Hope that’s some way to an explanation?

They do all look authentic and certainly shout Peak District to me. It's a superb bit of modelling, as individual buildings spot on, perhaps it's me but my only comment would be that to me the colours are too uniform on the cottage walls. It may well be the detailing is still ongoing (a few more chimneys?) but for me a little more tonal variation in the cottages would make it work better as an overall scene.

Adrian,
It’s a very interesting point you make.
There probably could be a reduction in uniformity to a degree, along with some further detailing.
Some of that is ongoing, as this is a WIP.

Your suggestion wouldn’t necessarily counter what I’m going to add, but with this being a forced perspective backdrop, the addition of detail and contrast needs to be handled carefully - as I’m sure you’d agree - otherwise the illusion of distance could be lost? The further the distance the more uniformity and lack of detail is my feeling with this.
It’s a balancing act though, that hopefully on completion with a bit more of what you suggest, will look right in the end.

Yes I'd agree and needs to be very subtle to maintain the illusion. I'm also aware of the danger in using modern photos to judge a bygone era. For example the photo I posted the walls by the roads seem to be a shade darker than other retaining walls for example around the courtyard of the house on the far right. This I would guess is due to the internal combustion engine pollution of the last 50-70 years.

Thank you Ian.
It just needs a bit more variety along the banks of the stream and a few more weeds, odds and ends in the meadow-field area I feel.

Another thing which must be so difficult to get to look natural in model form is stratified rock - bedding planes and their splitting into blocks.
Although reasonably familiar with geology, I always find the appearance of such rock faces in real life to be almost unnatural, more so when the fractures and fissures are regular and on a large scale.

In the cutting above the culvert you have craftily chosen something resembling neither English or Flemish bond - looks good!

To confess,
None of the rock work or the stone faced culvert front is my work - it’s all the work of Keith - the layout owner: he’s hand carved all of it in plaster.
My part has been the scenic dressing and colouring.
Thank you for the lovely comments nonetheless.
Neil.

I watched the video of Rosedale in today's Virtual show by the Guild it's looking really good and effective. It was great to watch and Keith covered all sorts of the little details.

I’ve been working on a depiction of York in 4mm scale, along with Paul Bambrick, on behalf of a client.
The client decided, along with York, there was scope to add a part of the line out to Scarborough, taking in Hutton’s Ambo.
We’ve now modelled Hutton’s Ambo - with a large dollop of licence (work in progress).
I’ve undertaken the ‘green stuff’. PB the backscene and many of the buildings seen here.
Our client has built the platforms, bridge across the river, etc.
